Theyyam Nilathezhuthu

Theyyam Nilathezhuthu was a pop up exhibition designed to coincide with the 2016 Theyyam festival in the village of Keezhara, India.  The project is part of an ongoing collaboration between myself and visual artist, Dhanaraj Keezhara. The project explores the impermanence of visual mapping through painting on traditional mud floors. The visual mapping of the painting captures rituals that happen within the temple grounds during theyyam. The drawings and design motifs were inspired from tangible elements of the theyyam festival, including costumes, body and face painting and the rituals. Another theme of this painting is ‘kannadi bimbam’, or self-reflection of our soul.

“The actual painting evolved over the past five days through initial outline was done with white acrylic paint in the beginning. Over the course of time new designs were created and details added using the primary color palette blue, red, and yellow.” Dhanaraj.
