Screenings in the Shed at Flinders Pier and as part of the ‘Can art save a planet’ discussion | Flinders Fringe Festival, 02.22-02.23 2025
A 13 minute film by Diana Chester and Jo Lane. BELLOW BELOW is part of ‘Across the Waters’, an Eco Arts Project which celebrates Westernport Bay/Warn Marin as a place of connection between people, land, waterways, sky and the wider Living World. The project invites people around the Bay to take part in activities that bring art, music, conservation and culture together.
Bellow Below allows audiences to hear and sea the orchestra of sounds that exist below our feet. Be transported to another world where you can hear sounds beyond the human aural capability spectrum. By using highly sensitive hydrophones and geophones, the audio recorded at the edge or below the wetlands, sand, sea and waters of Western Port Bay, Victoria becomes audible and visible.
This work was the result of two weeks of field recording and research conducted within and in areas surrounding Western Port Bay in Novemeber 2024.

ARTIST BIOS
Jo Lane
Jo Lane is a visual artist who has an active career of exhibiting work since 2004. She has received myriad drawing and sculptural awards in Australia and has her own art practice, which can be explored through her website at jolane.com. She has served as curator and board member at CLIMARTE (an organisation that collaborates with a wide range of artists, art professionals, and scientists to produce compelling programs for change). Jo received a diploma in art at Latrobe College, a Grad Cert at VCA, and a Masters from Uni of the Arts London.
Diana Chester
Diana Chester is an artist and sound studies scholar whose work produces critically influential studies, methods, and outputs that use sound to traverse disciplinary boundaries using feminist, de-colonial, and post-anthropocentric approaches to thinking and making. Recent exhibitions include, “Listening to Earth” Chau Chak Wing Museum, Sydney (2024), “Celestial Stories” Smithsonian, National Mall, USA (2023), “Light Echoes” Sydney Observatory, Australia (2023) , “ZAAG” Funkhaus, Mongolia (2023), “Sub_Merge” Atlantic Center for the Arts, USA (2023), “Living Landscapes Living Memories” Smithsonian, USA (2022). Chester is Senior Lecturer in Media and Communication at the University of Sydney, and vice president of the World Listening Project.
